PHILOU is a contemporary art gallery located in the Dogpatch of San Francisco, California. It was founded in 2016 by art director Philip Cronerud. The gallery is dedicated to presenting post-war and contemporary art and artists’ books with a primary focus on the diverse historical narratives of conceptual, photography, pop, and performance art from the 1960s to the present. The gallery artists have been included in international exhibitions such as Documenta, biennials in Venice, Istanbul, Gwangju, Taipei and Sao Paulo, Performa New York and Manifesta. From the onset the key objective has been to form an intergenerational program established artists of all media including painting, sculpture and installation and supporting emerging artists. Though the work is diverse in presentation the artists are linked by a commitment to continuously reassess the position of artistic practices within their wider cultural, social and political frameworks. The program includes solo and thematic exhibitions and the space also invites guest-curated projects. Over the last two years the gallery has developed into a location for exhibitions in different forms. We welcome all private and professional inquiries. Please note that artist submissions are on invitation only.
